Our Instructors

Kirsty McDonald

It has certainly been a challenging time for all of us.   Despite some difficult moments, I have learned many new skills during the pandemic and I’m thrilled I can now offer online classes to complement our in person sessions.  The introduction of online classes has brought greater flexibility to our business and I am now able to teach more people who couldn’t regularly attend classes in person.

I discovered Pilates 25 years ago after trying everything to cure an ongoing back problem – regular pain, instability and a lack of confidence to approach physical tasks – not helped by years of sedentary office work as an IT Manager.  Pilates taught me how to align my posture & utilise my abdominals – it simply felt like a miracle to be pain free after suffering for years.  I was so motivated to share my passion for Pilates that I retrained as an Instructor, initially at Michael King’s Pilates Institute in London.   I upgraded my Pilates Matwork skills in 2012 on returning from 4 years in Australia to live in the North East of England.  Since then, I’ve shared the benefits of Pilates with so many people at my Ryton Studio and my Gosforth classes who have had similar challenges but are now reaping the benefits of stronger abdominal muscles, reduced joint and back pain, better posture and a general improvement in their well-being!

My qualifications include:

  • Functional Anatomy, Bodymaster Method, 2021 (ongoing…)
  • Covid-19 Awareness Training, ReActivate/Future Fit, 2020
  • Pilates for Menopause, MK Pilates 2020
  • Sagalates, MK Pilates, 2020
  • Level 3 Diploma in Matwork Pilates, CYQ (2012)
  • Level 2 Emergency First Aid At Work
  • Level 2 Certificate in Matwork Pilates, Pilates Institute (2004)
  • Level 2 Certificate in Exercise and Fitness (2004)

I have been teaching Pilates for 4 years, having previously practised for over 10 years after a horse riding accident.  The benefits of practising Pilates has made a huge difference to my life as I have been able to improve my mobility and alleviate pain through exercise.  I had suffered with frozen shoulder, neck and back pain for many years. I was so passionate about the Pilates method that I decided to train as an instructor during my time working as a therapeutic Horse Riding Instructor.

I had taught riding from the age of 18, had worked in Childcare for a number of years and also worked for RDA Association (The Riding for The Disabled).  I taught children and adults with various disabilities, such as Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, Cerebral Palsy and clients recovering from Strokes.

I now teach Pilates full time and self-employed (living the DREAM!)  I get great job satisfaction from my work; it is so rewarding hearing how beneficial the exercises are for the clients as well as being relaxing.  The classes I deliver are suitable for absolute beginners and the exercises are layered so everyone can participate.  I enjoy the continual learning of Pilates and looking to develop my practice and study through regular training.

My qualifications include:

  • Covid-19 Awareness Training, ReActivate/Future Fit, 2020
  • Foamroller, MK Pilates, April 2020
  • First Aid At Work, March 2020
  • Level 3 Diploma in Instructing Pilates Matwork, Active IQ, July 2016
